After traveling around the Great Ocean Road to Adelaide I ventured north into the Flinders Ranges. My intentions were to travel up the Birdsville Track but due to the heat I turned east along the Murray and up through Hay, Dubbo, Tamworth Armidale to Brisbane. From Brisbane I continued north to Cairns returning to Melbourne via the coast.

The Coast to the Flinders

This trip was principally to give my mother a holiday following the death of her husband and my father in 1983 (just as I had started my first trip). To start with we were to head round the Great Ocean Road to Adelaide and then up into the Flinders Ranges.

The Birdsville Track was 50 degrees in the shade so this part of the trip was put on hold. My mother was also in a bad way (possible stroke) so we headed back east to my sister's home in Brisbane by the most direct route possible.

To Cairns

After a short break with my mother at my sister’s home and me heading down to Surfers Paradise we both continued north along the coast finally arriving in Cairns

Back Home

On the return trip we kept to the coast till south of Sydney before heading inland to the Snowy Mountains, then down to the Victorian coast.
A couple of notable occurrences on this leg included a minor fire in the engine bay, a drive along Rainbow Beach after a severe thunderstorm when the van was actually struck by lightning, imprint left on the track.
