The 1997 trip concentrated on the Channel-Country, Innamincka, Birdsville, Dalhousie Springs and Winton.

To Broken Hill

The main attraction for this leg was the ancient remains of Lake Mungo, some pig hunting and a trip down the goat track on the banks of the Darling River to end up at Brocken Hill to collect a HF radio for the more remote sections of this trip. It was then onto the Northern Flinders Ranges.

Flinders Ranges and Innamincka

The second leg would encompass three of the historic Tracks of the Australian Inland, The Strzelecki Track, The Birdsville Track and the Oodnadatta Track.

Birdsville Track

One of the areas that had been opened up to the public in the Alice Springs area was the Mereenie Loop Road. This road or rather track as most of the northern part was sand was originally used for the exploration of Oil and Gas. After passing Tnorala (Gosse Bluff) it continues west eventually exiting from the western approach to Kings Canyon. Kings Canyon had dramatically changed over the preceding nine years since a resort had been completed and roads sealed.
From Alice it was up the Sandover to Mt Isa and out to the Queensland Coast at Hervey Bay

Oodnatta Track

A short trip to see the main attractions of Fraser Island.

Alice Springs and Sandover Hwy

On leaving Hervey Bay I headed for the Bunya Mountains and then the Opal Fields of Lightning Ridge. Heading further south I spent some time in the Warrumbungle Nat. Park and even further south Wilsons Promontory and Philip Island.
